If you're using pedals that don't have a full circular contact on the crank arm (like MKS Sylvan or Custom Nuevo), you need these.
Even if your pedals do make full contact, it's a good idea to use washers anyway as they will ensure tighter installation and keep your crank arms from getting scratched up.
